Work Experience Success!

Here at StartUp Croydon, we are delighted to welcome enthusiastic young individuals to experience the workplace environment.

In June 2024, Tiana shared her work experience with StartUp Croydon.

This week has been a great work experience giving me insight into what makes a business thrive and the essential roles everyone plays at Startup Croydon.

Monday morning, I was warmly welcomed by Latoya, who ensured I was comfortable and well-informed. My day began with an induction and introductions to all staff members. Following that, I received a tour of the Newly built Creative Digital Lab, which left me in awe of the available resources.

I participated in the team’s weekly planning meeting, where issues were discussed, and plans were set for the week.  I had the opportunity to share a bit about myself and my interests for the week. Throughout the day, I organised the mail room, arranging stationery and letters, which I found quite therapeutic. I also conversed with other staff members to gain a deeper understanding of their roles. Before leaving, Latoya demonstrated the end-of-day lock-up procedures.

On Tuesday, I worked alongside Cameron the Business Development lead.  I researched non-profit organisations supporting film, TV, animation, VFX, and games, including the RTS (Royal Television Society), VFX Festival (Escape Studios), and The London Film School. These organisations provide valuable resources to help students excel in the industry and pursue their dreams.

In the afternoon, I delved into the CRM platform used to track deals and customer contacts. He explained the differences between cold, warm, and hot leads, and I even drafted emails using these methods. I concluded the day by helping Latoya deliver mail and parcels to clients.

Wednesday was particularly exciting and busy. I attended a women’s networking event, called ‘I Mean Business’ and met its founder, Alison Jones. There was a guest speaker called Khalifa Jones who shared her journey of creating a successful Croc shoe accessory business. She offered valuable advice to women entrepreneurs on confidence, empathy, trust, and financial management. I participated in group scenarios with the women, who were all incredibly kind and engaging. Later, Antonio gave me a fascinating tour of the Creative Digital Lab, showcasing the impressive lights and cameras.

On Thursday I worked closely with Office administrator Tazeen, assisting with printing and laminating documents, creating new pigeonholes and labels, and preparing sheets for posting purposes.

Friday, my final day, was spent adding new contacts and potential customers to the CRM and organising the mail room for new clients.

I really enjoyed my week at Startup Croydon. The team was exceptionally supportive and always available to answer my questions. This experience has been memorable, and I am grateful for Latoya’s guidance and the rest of the team. I would also like to say a special thanks to Saffron for inviting me to spend the week at Startup Croydon.
