Work Experience Success!

  • News

Here at StartUp Croydon we love to welcome in enthusiastic young people to experience what it is like to spend time in the workplace.

Megan shares her work experience with StartUp Croydon in February 2024.

I was given the wonderful opportunity to complete my work experience at StartUp Croydon. Through this experience, I was able to gain understanding of how other organisations function and expand my understanding of what it takes to manage a successful company. I completed a variety of administrative duties and developed my professional interpersonal communication skills.

I was greeted by the staff on Monday and given a tour of the many amenities within the office complex. The fact that StartUp provided board rooms, film and production rooms, and podcast spaces all in one hallway shocked me and I realised how much StartUp has to offer to help others.

I was able to email other small businesses on this particular day, and Latoya showed me how to handle different tasks in the main reception. This experience made me realise how much more difficult running a business is than I had anticipated, and how much work needs to be done in order for things to run well. I saw the amount of work that StartUp puts into supporting these small firms and the significance of keeping all the moving parts of your business organised because they will have a significant impact.

I had the opportunity to tour around the offices of the businesses on Tuesday and observe how they operated.  I got to see first hand what it was like to be in a podcast room with Glen and then Zawdie who later joined us. I had the opportunity to observe people recording their podcasts and observe the behind the scenes  work that a sound engineer would undertake. I hadn’t anticipated being able to see or do this, so it was a truly enjoyable experience. Thank you to Glen and Zawdie who made this fun and entertaining for me.

In addition, I discovered that designing a poster on Canva with Latoya was far more difficult than I had anticipated. It took more than just typing the information onto a page; we also needed to consider the background, fonts, and colour scheme to try and make certain information stand out and to align with StartUp Croydon’s theme.  I also sent messages to individuals on Instagram, and Latoya showed me how to appropriately message them online.

I worked at the front desk for at least an hour every day during the week for practice. I was responsible for greeting guests and answering the door, making phone calls, organising mail for various companies, and responding to any questions that individuals might have. On my first day, I was terrified to execute any of these things, but I was able to gain confidence and comfort by doing them little by little.

I had the best chance to take part in the “I Mean Business” women’s networking event on Wednesday. I was able to meet Allison Johnson who hosted this and other women who all own their own businesses and I was inspired to become like them by attending the event, which also helped me improve my networking abilities in the business world. The women at the event shared humour, life experiences, and gave me advice how to be a  businesswomen. I learned a lot from this, and it will undoubtedly be useful to me in the future.

I attended a monthly Bootcamp at StartUp Croydon on Thursday. I’m quite grateful for this chance, as it allowed me to increase my speech confidence and engage in more conversations with strangers. Saffron explained the value of each component of a business’s sales and how to get comfortable with them. Additionally guest speaker, Dee Miller gave us a really insightful presentation on Marketing and how to reach an audience. This allowed me to understand the significance of things like product, price, place, promotion.

Overall, I had an amazing time at StartUp Croydon that I will never forget. Even though I’m only in year 10, I received adult-level treatment, for which I am grateful because I wanted the right experience. The group I worked with was really kind and always there to support me when I needed it. I am so grateful for the surprising abundance of experiences I have here that I never would have imagined. I couldn’t have picked a better organisation or one that has made me feel more welcome and at ease than StartUp Croydon.

I want to show sincere thanks to Saffron Saunders, the CEO, for giving me this amazing chance to work with her and being so welcoming to me. Additionally, I want to express my gratitude to the team I was assigned to. I will always be grateful to Ben, Tanya and of course Latoya for the friendly environment and advice you all gave me. As well as this, thank you for your patience and  guidance over my entire week at StartUp Croydon and for making my experience a memorable and informative one.”
