We have been empowering entrepreneurs in the borough for 40 years and want to celebrate our past and help propel our community’s future by hosting a brand new prestigious award, the Geoffrey Dove Award.

StartUp Croydon, originally known as Croydon Business Venture, was founded in 1983 by Bernard Weatherill, MP for Croydon North East, who recruited six directors from the business community, including Geoffrey Dove, to assist start-ups and small businesses by giving high-quality, practical advice on the requirements and pitfalls of starting a new business.

Croydon is a growth zone and has always been a hub for enterprise, and we are so grateful to our founders, including Geoffrey Dove, who gave up his time and expertise to continually help propel our organisation forward.

The Geoffrey Dove Award for Contributions to Croydon’s Local Economy.

Geoffrey and his twin brother David were joint managing directors of the Dove Group PLC, Austin and Jaguar main dealers, the business started by their father in 1925.

The Doves empire grew to more than 15 garages across the South of England, giving great economic wealth to the region. However, Geoffrey had a social conscience and wanted to offer inspiration and guidance to others as they started their journey.

Geoffrey was one the key stakeholders to support Bernard Weatherill when they launched Croydon Enterprise Agency in 1983, and was honoured by the Queen in 2001 with an MBE for services to small businesses in Croydon. Geoffrey still likes to keep up with our activities to this day.

We would like to honour Geoffrey by marking his contribution to our small businesses by naming a new award for contribution to the Croydon economy The Geoffrey Dove Award.

We will present the award at our summer party, so be sure to nominate the person you feel should win this award.
